Birds in Paradise

Cayman is a birding Mecca with indigenous species as well as travelers in migration. Above is the Midnight Heron and below is the Cayman Islands national bird the Cayman Parrot.

While at Silver Sands you may see a Snowy Egret cruising the grounds like this iguana hunter (below).

Above is the ever sea faring Frigate bird. Wherever there are fish, there will be these large winged birds looking for scraps. Below is Cayman's version of the seagull, the Tern.

Many of you have probably noticed the friendly chickens that roam free around the island and Silver Sands. For more info check out our post on the Wild Chickens of Cayman.

Below is the Greater Antillean Grackle, or locally known as the Ching Ching an very familiar face around the island. Watch out for these naughty birds, they will stalk you and your lunch waiting for you to merely glance away from your plate and swoop in and steal your french fries!

These two guys above are a Sand Piper which can be seen very commonly up at Rum Point running along the beach, and the Mocking Bird, which can be spotted all over the island.

Winter time is the best time for spotting the Brown Pelican trolling the shore, check out our past post with the below pelican hunting right up the beach from Silver Sands!

For some exotic fun is the Scarlet Ibis that can be seen in the aviary in Boatswains Beach.
