Our palm trees and casurina trees are not only lush and outrageously tropically beautiful, but they offer some wonderful natural shade to enjoy.

Summer in the Cayman Island means calm crystal clear water to one side and a giant passing thunder cloud to the other. Summer storms are gorgeous to watch from under a thatched hut on our gorgeous and spacious beach.

Authentically made Silver Thatched roofing. Nothing like it, keeps the heat our, shelter from the sun and rain, gorgeous to look at and a beautiful piece of Cayman heritage to gaze upon.

As quiet as our beach is, there is always someone watching, like our resident chickens! They are harmless and some even friendly but they stick to themselves and are happy and free chickens.

The Pinks: These pink sunsets were taken a 2 days after Hurricane Grace passed over Grand Cayman. It was by far the worst storm we have had in years, but Silver Sands made it out ok, except our iconic mango tree by the office, we will surely miss that!! And for those that are wondering and concerned about 7-Mile sand going missing, well we always have loads! Silver Sands was built so long ago, and set back at a safe distance from the beach. This building style allows for the sand to come and go naturally unlike sea walls or buildings that are literally built on the sand which then causes the sand to disappear and not return. We are so grateful for our grounds that carry with it the Old Cayman Charm (and beach!)

The Blues: The blues at our beach are honestly some of the most brilliant on the whole island. When you stay here you look at the water, especially in the morning, and it is just an incredible shade of blue. It never ever gets old and in a way mesmerizing. For sun lovers you can sit on the loungers in the bright sun and for shade lovers we have so much natural shade from the traditionally silver thatched palm huts as well as the palm trees and casurinas that allow a perfect view but from a cool shady spot. 

The Greens: With rainy season from about May-October the Cayman Islands experiences almost daily showers. Sometimes in West Bay, sometimes in South Sound, sometimes for 5 minutes and sometimes all over the island for the whole day! And let's not even mention hurricanes. But for the most part coming to visit Cayman in the summer is a lovely time of year as all the greenery is getting the water it needs. The Seagrape tree is a gorgeous native coastal tree to the Cayman Islands. We have a few on the property at Silver Sands, can you find them? They are most notable when the grapes are fruiting. Can you spot the ripe grapes ready for pickin'!? Caymanians eat them off the tree and make a delicious jam. The Cayman Parrots also LOVE them and can pick a tree clean of the ripe fruits in no time.

Turtle Nesting Season is Here Again! Come Stay and See For Yourself.

We covered all the latest and up to date information on turtles nesting here in Cayman last August in our blog post Turtle Lovin! So definitely check that out for all the nitty gritty and interesting details of turtle nesting, turtle behavior and mating, and of course the cute little hatchlings.

Being that Silver Sands is one of the turtle's favorite nesting beaches on the whole of 7-Mile Beach, we wanted to also share some photos of these beautiful animals that breed on Cayman's shores to celebrate the 2021 nesting season!

Since the turtles think Silver Sands has the best beach, so do we... and we love to share!!! If you Staycation with us here at Silver Sands during the nesting months there is a very likely chance that you will see a turtle come up and lay eggs at night, that you will see fresh tracks in the early morning, and later in the season, you might even get lucky enough to see a nest hatch and all the little turtles scurry to the sea.

Beauty of the Botanical Park

The Queen Elizabeth Botanical Park is a hidden gem here in the Cayman Islands. The lush foliage and flowers, the Woodland Trail, Heritage Garden, the lake, orchid boardwalk, lily pond and of course the extra special Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas are just a few of the attractions. 

About a 45 minute drive from Silver Sands, the park can offer a nice change of scenery from the beautiful beach and will allow you to discover a different side of the Cayman Islands. It is recommended getting there when they open at 9am to avoid the heat of the day. You can spend as long as you want wandering around the grounds, and keep a keen eye out for rare birds and the iguanas, they are wild animals and if you are quiet and calm, your close encounter can be one to remember! Finish your experience at the gift shop where you can buy your favorite Cayman souvenirs. 

The National Trust of the Cayman Islands began its work with the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana soon after its formation in 1987, with an ultimate repopulation goal of 1000. The Habitat has become an exceptionally popular area as the captive breeding grounds for these fascinating reptiles, who only two decades ago were facing extinction. These intriguing creatures are frequently found freely roaming the grounds of the Park, and delight both local and foreign visitors who happen upon them. They will not hurt you and if you are calm you can have quite a close encounter, and if you are lucky they will strike a pose for you to get the perfect pic.

The Botanical Park Blues

The Orchid Boardwalk features native orchids as well as non native species. It is fun to walk along the wooden boardwalk through the lush garden and spot these elusive blooming beauties. The Botanical Park teams up with the Cayman Islands Orchid Society to have their annual Orchid Show and sale. A fun event for all the orchid enthusiasts out there.

The bird watching in the park is such fun! You never know who is going to fly by. Pictured in this blog are the Greater Antillean Grackle (or lovingly referred to locally as the ching ching), the Cayman Parrot (the national bird of the Cayman Islands), the Cayman Bananaquit, and the West Indian Woodpecker.
