Pirates Week 2019

The Cayman Islands have just finished their 42nd Pirates Week Festival celebrating Cayman Culture and Pirate Folklore. The festivities are held on all islands but Grand Cayman hosts the most famous of events with five fun filled days of music, street dances, competitions, games, food festivals of traditional dishes and drinks, a Pirate Pooch Parade, a children’s fun day, teen dances, two glittering parades, sporting events for all ages, a pirate invasion and spectacular fireworks displays! Thousands of people line the streets to watch the spectacle and its good-natured swashbuckling fun. It's the only event of its kind in the Caribbean region and it caters to everyone in the family!

Pirates Week 2016: The Pirates Pooch Parade!

Here in Cayman everyone gets into the famous Pirates Week! Including our beloved Cayman mutts and the Pirates Pooch Parade!

November is a great time to visit the Cayman Islands, it is still low season and the island is on the quieter side with visitors, Silver Sand's beach is still very quiet, plus there are the activities of Pirates Week! You can even go to the Humane Society and adopt a doggie for the day and participate in the fun Pirate Pooch Parade.

Many people come on vacation and miss their pets at home. Visitors can satisfy their canine cravings and head to the Humane Society where the dogs are always grateful for a walk, a day out at the beach, or even adoption!! There are many organizations that can help visitors take these beautiful and unique Cayman mutts back home to the US for a forever home.

A huge thanks to the Humane Society of the Cayman Islands, all the lovely Cayman residents who are doggie lovers and took the time to dress the HS doggies as pirates, and of course Barb for her amazing photos, thanks Barbara Virano Cevela Photography!

Pirates Week 2015: Featuring the Jolly Roger!

Pirates Week in the Cayman Islands is held every November and is great fun not only for children but for adults and anyone who enjoys dressing up as a pirate and dancing around Georgetown. It is also an excellent opportunity to celebrate Cayman's long standing island heritage.

The cardboard boat races are a funny activity that happens on the final Saturday of the festival. Each team must build a boat from cardboard and whoever makes it around the target and back to the beach first wins... providing they don't sink!! This year it was the Mepco Viking boat as the winners, and yes there was a sinker but they nearly made it back to the beach so props given to everyone who made a boat!

Flomotion, the acrobatic group performed to the entertainment of all, they even used the Jolly as a giant prop and spring board!

This was the first year they did an Illumination Night Parade and it was lovely and lively! Then the evening was topped off with fireworks as a grand finale to mark the closing of this festive and fun week. (See videos below)

Pirates in the Caribbean, Cayman Style

Its this time of year again... Pirates Week 2014! The Cayman Islands celebrates the piratey heritage with street parties, fireworks and the landing of the pirates. 

It is an excellent time to visit the island as it marks the end of the hurricane season, and it is a great time to mix with locals and enjoy the island life. Silver Sands offers low season rates during this time of year so please contact us for accommodation during this time.

The tradition is for the pirates to land in Hog Sty Bay in downtown Georgetown and kidnap the governor, followed by a parade and street party.

It is also a great photo op! Barb Photography was kind enough to let us use some of her photos from last weekend's parade and festivities.

There is fun for adults and children alike with participants dressing up in the lastest pirate fashion. 

The party in Georgetown begins and ends with a street party and a fantastic display of fireworks!

There are Heritage Day celebrations through out the week celebrating each districts culture and traditions. These events include dancing, cat boat races and an assortment of local dishes for sale.
