Hurricane Ivan's Destruction & Rebuilding of Silver Sands

Hurricane Ivan hit Grand Cayman September 11, 2004. This Category 5 hurricane had winds of up to 165 MPH and turned Grand Cayman into a disaster zone.

Above and below are right after the storm before clean up commenced. It was a MESS! Such destruction.

The above photo is quite some time after the storm, you can see clean up is well underway. The trees and foliage still have some recovering to do...

Sand was literally everywhere, and it took lots of moving and shuffling to get it back on the beach where it belongs!

And the pool. Wow what a mess....

Firstly, during the storm the waves and storm surge was breaking all the way up into the pool. So after things calmed down we could see in the pool and it had a sandy bottom, and lots of sea life living inside, such as baby seargent majors and garden eels. Poor guys.

Secondly, the deck furniture was put in the pool so it wouldn't blow away, which is a great idea in theory, but not a good idea if it is left there to fester and grow algae for 3 months. This clean up was a nasty one!

It was a massive job to remove all the sand and debris from the pool and power wash off the algae, but they did it! Such hard work from so many people to get our beloved Silver Sands back to beautiful.

As for all the debris, damaged and ruined furniture, roofing, etc., etc., etc., out to the road for pick up.

Gwenda our dedicated manager today, worked tirelessly trying to clean up the damage.
